The Illinois Attorney General's Office has told Bloomington city officials they need to install a new elevator at Grossinger Motors Arena to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Grossinger Motors Arena needs a new elevator to comply with federal disability guidelines.

The Bloomington City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on a $610,000 contract to install a new elevator at the venue.

The Illinois attorney general determined the city-owned arena was in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Patrons who need to use the elevator now have enter through the VIP entrance, which is not ADA-accessible from the venue’s main entrance at ground level. Other elevators are in a restricted area for performers and their crews for security reasons.

The AG’s office has given the city until the end of the year to come into compliance.

The city received just one bid for the project, from Felmley-Dickerson of Bloomington.
