Nature brings out her showiest colors in autumn.

Autumn produces some of the most dramatic colors you'll see all season.  Start planting now for a future of fabulous hues.

  • When selecting your colors, bear in mind what goes behind them. So if you have a bright yellow house, a sugar maple with its fiery autumn leaves might make too strong a statement. A cooler background color to brights makes a fine impression.
  • Brilliant fall foliage colors include red, yellow and orange, but you can also pick up notes of purple, such as in an oak leave hydrangea.
  • It's not just about the leaves.  Think about berries and what a vivid impact they can make all autumn into winter (if the birds leave them alone that long!)
  • Holly shrubs, American beauty berry and crabapple are popular choices for fall color.
  • And don't forget about ornamental grasses, such as purple fountain grass, prairie switch grass or Japanese blood grass can make a stunning statement in your yard in the fall.GLT's Grow is your source for sage gardening advice and down-to-earth tips.
