GLT Datebook: Normal West Students Find A Voice With Jazz

Ralph Weisheit

High School holds more potential than studying, proms and zits.  Joining the high school jazz band can help students learn lessons not found in the classroom.  Twin Cities teens have practiced, practiced, practiced, and now they're taking the stage at Normal Community West High School for Jazz Night.  Jazz Director Ryan Budzinski  previews the upcoming concert.

*Jazz Night is Friday, March 11th at NCWHS.  The music starts at 5:30 PM.

*In addition to Normal West, the Parkside and Kingsley Junior High and NCHS bands will be performing.

*Jazz Director Ryan Budzinski says playing the in jazz band can help young performers grow artistically and help them find their voice.  The need for improvisational skills pushes the performers to stretch their talents.

*Some NCWHS jazz band performers have gone on to have full-time careers in music and music education.

Although NCHS and NCWHS are cross-town rivals, when the jazz bands get together, the players enjoy learning from each other and comparing notes.
