Bloomington Alderman Jim Fruin recieved a standing ovation following his announcement that he will retire from representing Ward 9. Fruin made the announcement at Monday's council meeting. He said he'll finish up his term that ends in April.

"So I'll still be around for six months, but I do think it's time for a fresh face and fresh perspective," he said. "And change is always good."

Fruin, who has served Ward 9 since 2007, said he's had some time to reflect over the past few weeks and has decided he wants to serve Bloomington in other capacities. Alderman Diana Hauman said she's disappointed he won't be sitting next to her in May.

"He's certainly been an asset to the council over the years, and I wish him well."

Also during the meeting, the council approved tax incentives for a new Best Western Plus hotel that will be built at the current Baymont Inn and Suites near the newly-developed Empire Crossing shopping center. Hauman said, if people see a hotel near the shopping center, it should be positive for everybody.

"Hopefully that's attracting more people, not just from Bloomington-Normal [and] McLean County, but, perhaps, from other areas as well."

Aldermen also gave the go-ahead for the downtown TIF district surrounding the Front and Center block, $1.9 million in sewer maintenance, and private funding for the Creativity Center.
