Food Of The Mother Road

Creative Commons

Historic Route 66 was not only a highway, it was a pie-way.

Let's hear about food on the mother road. Rob Dirks is a retired food anthropologist at Illinois State University. He will speak at the 2nd Annual Route 66 Miles of Possibility Conference Thursday through Sunday in Bloomington, featuring a variety of speakers, historic tours and more.

Dirks recalls the Phil-Kron a drive in movie theater that offered truckers an all you can eat buffet. It later became the Sinorak and is now a business complex just off Main Street and Veterans Parkway

In this conversation with GLT's Charlie Schlenker, Dirks says the cultural commonality in the restaurants along Route 66 was capitalist competition and a desire to be distinctive.
