Economic 'Mixed Bag' For Peoria's Second Quarter

The latest Statistical Composite of the Peoria area Economy (SCOPE) report for April, May and June shows some ups and downs that, in effect, extend a level of consistency established in the first three months of the year.

The report is compiled by Bernard Goitein, Director of the Center For Business and Economic Research at Bradley University in Peoria. During Sound Ideas, Goitein said. Some of the highlights of this second quarter report:

  • Labor Markets: Employer-based job losses were 3.5 percent less frequent than during the first quarter. Number of jobs worked at employers fell .09 percent. The number of new job openings remained 3.3 percent below the year before.
  • Manufacturing: 3.5 percent decline in jobs, leaving employment 7.4 percent below second quarter 2015.
  • Services and trade: retail sales up estimated 3.5 percent. Retail jobs were steady with year to date holding at plus 3.5 percent.
  • Home Sales: supply of homes up 6.5 percent with the year to date total up 7.4 percent. "Sold" prices were of 6.8 percent. Building permits for single family homes were down 41.6 percent, putting year to date totals down 17.9 percent.
