Connect Transit, Cabs Offer Free Rides On Election Day

If you or someone you know needs a ride on Election Day, there are some options.

Connect Transit will offer free rides all day Tuesday. One reason is to help voters whose polling place has moved from Parkside Junior High or Normal West schools to Heartland Community College. The college can be accessed on the Yellow route.

“We want to make sure everyone that can vote does on Election Day. Providing free rides ensures that the lack of transportation to polls will not be an obstacle for Bloomington-Normal citizens to vote,” General Manager Isaac Thorne said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Checker Cab and Yellow will also be offering free rides to and from polling places. Voters who call (309) 828-0123 must mention “Taxi2Vote” to get the free ride.

The service is not affiliated with any political party or campaign.

“The ability to vote is a right in this great country of ours,” said Checker Cab President Aaron Halliday. “I think it’s important that people have the chance to vote, and I would hate to think that the lack of transportation would stop someone from exercising their right to vote. We have done this twice in the past and had a great turnout. I’m hoping to see an even better turnout this year.”
