A supernatural film comedy classic lives again in a reboot that's thrilled some and annoyed others. When the Ghostbusters reboot was announced with an all female cast, a cry of foul arose from the internet as fans of the original film felt a reboot with women was akin to movie heresy. But GLT's culture critic, Shari Zeck has some advice for the outraged: Chill out and enjoy.
There's no rule book that says in order to give some aggressive ectoplasm a righteous smack, you have to be a dude. Sisters are doing it for themselves in the new reboot of Ghostbusters, and Shari Zeck, GLT's culture maven said they do it very well, indeed. "It's a film about female bonding as much as the first film was about male bonding. They are different characters aimed at different audiences. The actors are terrific together."
The reboot opened in North American this past weekend and did respectable, but not bang up, box office. Zeck said the less-than-boffo receipts could have a long term impact on future female buddy movies. "There were suggestions going around the internet that people should get out and see it this first weekend to make a statement about opening weekend box office, and that an all female cast can carry an opening weekend box office. This is because of Hollywood incredibly limited vision, that it's all about the opening weekend, when, in fact, lots of movies make their money back later"
The CGI special effects are strong in this film, noted Zeck. Yet they don't overshadow something more important. "One of the great things about this film is the female bonding. It's fun! It's a joy to watch."
