Bloomington Council To Consider Gambling Machine Fees, Sales Tax Sharing

The Bloomington City Council will continue its discussion and make a decision on charging up to $500 per gambling machine at businesses in the city.

Aldermen tabled the proposal in April to have more time to consider it. If approved, the city could see as much as $127,000 per year in revenue, which could be used for fire and police pensions or be added to the city’s general fund.

The council will also discuss sales tax sharing between the Twin Cities during a work session prior to the regular meeting. The subject has been under consideration by an ad-hoc committee that includes council members from both Bloomington and Normal, but this will be the first time it has been discussed publicly. Aldermen will not be asked to vote on creating a sales tax sharing zone, but they will give direction to city staff on whether they want to move forward with the idea.
