B-N Home Sales Outpacing Workforce Reductions

Ralph Weisheit

Sales of homes and condos in Bloomington-Normal continued their recent upward trends last month.

According to figures supplied by the Bloomington-Normal Association of Realtors, home sales were up 3.3 percent in August compared to the same month last year, and are up five percent year-to-date.

Association President Karen Stailey-Lander said this is in spite of some recent not-so-good news from the area's major employers. "I think this five percent over last year is very good considering everything that's going on with Mitsubishi, the Clinton power station, State Farm and even Caterpillar being not that far away," said Stailey-Lander.

She said she doesn't think the job cutbacks will impact sales much down the road.

"We've handled a great deal of them already, so I think that's a very, very positive thing," she added.

Stailey-Lander said most of the burden is being borne now and a fairly healthy overall economy is helping the real estate market. There were 275 total units sold last month, compared to 266 in August last year. Inventory is down slightly to 1,118.
