Your cat may have a genetic disease -- there's no avoiding it in some felines.  But there are steps you can take to help your cat battle back against genes.

  • Clinicians Brief revealed the top five most common genetic diseases to strike cats.
  • Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease is very common.  Himalayan and Persian cats may be at increased risk.  Cats that are stressed by other pets or family members are likely to struggle with this.  Give the cat her own space so stress levels don't impact bladder issues.
  • As you might expect, diabetes made the list.  Keeping your cat trim and feeling her a low carb diet can help hold this disease at bay.
  • Lymphocytic or Plasmacytic Inflammatory Disease.  In cats, this disease frequently manifests as inflammatory bowel disease. It can also impact their teeth to the point of prompting total removal of all teeth.  Although this sounds extreme, it can solve the problem with inflammation.
  • Polycystic kidney disease can lead to renal failure at a young age in cats.
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy also makes the list.  This heart condition appears often in Ragdolls and Maine Coon cats.  If your animal is predisposed to have this condition, tests can determine how far along the heart disease has progressed.  Heart medication might be useful for your pet.  WGLT depends on financial support from users to bring you stories and interviews like this one.
