Jazz

  • The Jimmy Binkley Trio spends Saturdays from 7 to 10 PM at Sky Harbor in Peoria.
  • The Knox College Cherry Street Combo is at McGillicuddy's Restaurant and Bar in Peoria on Thursdays from 8 PM to midnight
  • Eddie and Judy Howard play at Jim's Steakhouse in downtown Peoria Tuesdays from 7:30 PM to 1 AM.
  • Larry Harms is a Basta O'Neill's in Washington each Thursday from 6 to 9 PM.  309-682-9393
  • Dave Hoffman and Friends play at Panache in Peoria Fridays from 5 to 7 PM.
  • The Central Illinois Jazz Society is hosting concerts at the Starting Gate Banquet Room in Landmark Recreation Center in Peoria (3225 N. Dries Lane). On Sunday, Jan. 22 it's The Boss Trio. On Feb. 19 it's the Brian Choban Jazz Quintet. David Hoffman and Friends play on March 18 and the ICC Hard Bop Band performs on April 15. The music begins at 6 PM with the CIJS House Band, followed by the guest band at 7:15 PM.
  • Fat Jack's in downtown Bloomington presentslive music every 2nd Friday of the month at 7 PM.
  • Illinois State University's Jazz Ensembles I & II present a concert of big band music on Friday, Feb. 10 at 8 PM in the ISU Center for the Performing Arts. On Tuesday, Feb. 14, the Ensembles presents the annual Valentine's Big Band Dance from 7 to 10 PM at the New Lafayette Club in Bloomington.
  • The Contemporary Art Center in Peoria welcomes a variety of jazz artists to perform on Friday evenings.
  • The Brian Choban Jazz Quintet plays at the Eaton Gallery in downtown Bloomington on Friday, Feb. 3 beginning at 6:45 PM.
  • The Aduki Jazz Group performs at Baxter's in Bloomington on Feb. 18 from 6 to 10 PM.
  • The Frank Trompeter Quintet plays Marley's Pub in Springfield Feb. 3, 10, 24 & March 2 from 6 to 8 PM.
  • The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts welcomes Leon Redbone on Feb. 9 at 7:30 PM. On April 12 it's Joshua Redman & Brad Meldau at 7:30 PM.
  • The Tryon Festival Theatre at the Krannert Center in Urbana hosts the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra at 7:30 PM on Feb. 4th.
  • The Prairieland Dixie band is a Maguire's in downtown Bloomington on Feb. 18 from 7:30 - 11 PM. On Feb. 21 the band is at Fat Jack's in Bloomington from 7 to 10 PM.

Blues

  • Shenanigan's in Peoria is hosting an open blues jam on Sundays, from 4 to 8 PM. 
  • The Treehouse Lounge in Bloomington features blues acts every 3rd Friday of the month from 7 to 10 PM.
  • The Rhythm Kitchen in Peoria hosts acoustic blues Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 PM.
  • The Castle Theatre in downtown Bloomington presents live blues on the first Friday of the month at 8 PM. Ruthie Foster and Paul Thorn perform on March 30 at 8 PM.
  • The River Beach Pub & Eatery in Chillicothe welcomes Southside Cindy & the Sliptones on Feb. 18.
  • Matthew Curry and the Fury play Feb. 4 at the Bloomington Eagles Club at 8 PM and at the Contemporary Art Center in Peoria on Feb. 10 at 5:30 PM.
  • The Cantina in Pekin welcomes Dave Weld and the Imperial Flames on Feb. 3. Showtime is 8 PM.
  • George Thorogood & the Destroyers play at the Peoria Civic Center Theatre on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 PM.
  • The Alamo in Springfield hosts blues every Monday night at 8. Feb. 6, Matt O'Ree; Feb. 13, Hurricane Ruth; Feb. 20, The Distillery; Feb. 27, The Blues Deacons.

Acoustic, Folk, Americana, Celtic, etc.

  • The McLean County Museum of History in downtown Bloomington hosts a bluegrass music jam every Tuesday evening at 7.
  • The Princeton Coffeehouse welcomes a variety of singer/songwriters to the venue, which is located at 25 E. Marion St. in downtown Princeton Jan. 28, Peter Mulvey; Feb. 25, Stacey Earle & Mark Stuart; March 24, Dana & Susan Robinson; April 28, Rita Hosking; May 26, Nels Andrews. Showtime is 7:30 PM.
  • Berchtold & Stear play at Paddy O'Flaherty's in Morton from 6 to 9 PM on Feb. 11, March 24 & April 21.
  • Barry Cloyd's Celtricity performs at the Forest Park Nature Center in Peoria Heights on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 PM.
  • The Castle Theatre in downtown Bloomington presents the Gibson Brothers, Feb. 10 at 8 PM. Feb. 23 it's Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three. Showtime is 8 PM. Also, Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls on Feb. 24 at 8 PM. On March 29 it's Justin Townes Earle at 8 PM. March 11 at 7:30 PM it's a documentary about and performance from Chicago Farmer. On April 21 it's Red Horse at 8 PM.
  • The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts welcomes Celtic Tenors on March 11 at 7:30 PM. Carrie Newcomer plays at 7:30 PM on Thursday, March 15. On April 21 it's The Step Crew at 7:30 PM.
  • The Cantina in Pekin features a variety of live bluegrass, acoustic and rockabilly music. The Frayed Knots perform on Jan. 28. March 3rd it's Barefoot Fred. Showtime is 8 PM.
  • The traditional Irish band, Bua, plays at the IMC in Urbana on Feb. 7 at 8 PM.

Theatre

  • Community Players in Bloomington presents a variety of drama, comedies and musicals. Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit runs March 2 - 17; March 22 - 25 it's An Evening of One Acts; Hairspray runs May 11 - 27.
  • Heartland Theatre Company presents a variety of comedies and dramas at the theatre at One Normal Plaza. Superior Donuts, April 12 - 29.
  • The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts presents The Rivalry on Feb. 16 at 7 PM. On Feb. 4 it's Ailey II at 7:30 PM. Coming up Feb. 17 it's Improvised Musical at 7:30 PM and Say Goodnight Gracie is on stage at 7:30 PM, April 14.
  • Urbana's Krannert Center welcomes Mandy Patinkin and Nathan Gunn perform in the Foellinger Great Hall on March 31 at 7:30 PM.
  • The Peoria Civic Center Theatre presents An Evening with Garrison Keillor, Feb. 13 at 8 PM.
  • Lincoln and Dougls debate again in The Rivalry, a dramatization at The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 16 at 7 PM.

Art Exhibits

  • The McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington is currently showing works by Jin lee and Rhondal McKinney through Feb. 18 in the Brandt Gallery. In the Armstrong Gallery it's drawings by John Cassidy.
  • The Contemporary Art Center in Peoria presents "Fictional Spaces, " paintings and prints by Joshua Bindewald, Matt Irie and Josh Reames, running Jan. 7 - Feb. 3. Also, Claire Lieberman "The Wave" is up Jan. 7 - Feb. 26.
  • The University Galleries at ISU in Normal presents "The Will to Believe in Something More," which features selections from the image archive of the Borderland Collective. The show is up Jan. 17 - Feb. 19. Feb. 28 - April 1 it's "An Experiment in Collectivity," featuring work by Melanie Hunter, Colin Nesbit and more. "Munro Galloway: Book of M" is up Feb. 28 - April 1. The 2012 Student Annual is April 10 - May 13. Photographer Takeshi Moro's work will be on display April 10 - May 13. The annual Postcard Art Fundraiser is April 28 from 6 to 10 PM.

Miscellaneous: Readings, Comedy, Music, etc.

  • The Contemporary Art Center in Peoria presents Whisper and Shout, a monthly open mic poetry event on the first Thursday of the month. The show starts at 8 PM..
  • The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts presents The Klezmatics on Feb. 25 at 7:30 PM
  • Garrison Keillor is coming to the Peoria Civic Center Theatre on Feb. 13 at 7 PM. David Sedaris is appearing on Friday, April 20 at 8 PM.
  • The Castle Theatre presents on March 10 at 8 PM the funk band Here Come the Mummies.
  • TheatresCool in downtown Bloomington welcomes the adult improv troupe, Disfunction Junction, on Jan. 28 at 7 PM. Then at 10 PM is music from Oh, Alchemy and Off to the Moon. On Feb. 14 it's Re:Verse, an open mic poetry night.
  • Vocalist Michelle Vought is giving a concert of classical music on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 3 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bloomington.
  • Coffee Nation in Bloomington welcomes the pop punk band Real Friends, plus Modus Aurora, Step Back, and The Mailbox Club on Friday, Feb. 3 starting at 8 PM.
