GLT Assistant News Director Charlie Schlenker grew up in Rock Island, Illinois and graduated from Augustana College in 1984. He fell into radio when the Director of the Shakespeare in the Park group he was in suggested he look into the campus NPR affiliate. (The Director was also the Station Manager). Charlie started as a newsreader and classical music announcer and has gone on to make gestures at journalism in Lasalle-Peru, Champaign-Urbana, and Bloomington-Normal. He's also won more than three dozen wire service news awards and two national Edward R Murrow awards.
For Charlie, few things can compare with the cadences of the spoken word. “Intonation enriches meaning shaded through each dip and rise of inflection, “ he says.“Add sound from natural surroundings and the result appeals at once to emotion and intellect, a gestalt largely lost in media other than radio.”
When he's not on the trail of a news story,Charlie likes to spend time with his family, read history, and play chess.
