As a child, Willis played "TV weatherman" in his bedroom, using an old
Kleenex box as the camera. As he grew into formative years, he was drawn into the more intimate medium of radio. During his senior year at
Bloomington High School , Willis finished third in the "Radio Speaking"
division of the state speech contest, the only year he competed.
Willis attended radio technical school in Minnesota and began his career as an 18-year old re-building tape cartridge equipment during an overnight engineering shift at what was then WAKC in Normal (across Main Street from what is now Monical's Pizza.) He worked swing shifts at WJBC in Bloomington during college years at ISU before his 14-year career as the station's night time announcer. He came to GLT as assistant news director in 1993 and was named news director four years later. He has won numerous awards for reporting and news writing and was named Downstate Best Reporter by Illinois Associated Press in 2004 and again in 2007.
Willis volunteers annually with his church's high school summer work camp mission trip and is involved in prison ministry. He loves the St. Louis Cardinals and spending time at his Bloomington home with his wife and two sons.
